Stavros, Thessaloniki Greece

Stavros lies on Strimonikos Bay, about 70 km from Thessaloniki, and it’s only around a 40–minute drive from Thessaloniki Airport. The town is surrounded by hills and dense forest, sitting at the foot of the mountain. Thanks to the local winds, it’s known as an “air spa”, offering a pleasant mix of sea mist and clean mountain air. The town itself is pleasant, with plenty of parks, flowers, shops, restaurants and coffee bars, as well as an amusement park and sports facilities. However, it does give the impression that not a huge amount is invested in maintaining tourist infrastructure. On the other hand, because Stavros is not an expensive resort, it’s still a very decent option for a holiday. The beach at Stavros forms part of a 10 km stretch of sand along the bay. It’s split into two sections by a small harbour and pier. The left-hand side, looking out to sea, is the town beach. This part is wide, with sand on the shore, some stones in the first few metres in the water, and then sand and a shallow area stretching for several dozen metres. There are a few cafés with their own sunbeds and umbrellas; use of these is free if you buy a drink or a coffee. There’s also plenty of open space to lay out your own towels and equipment. Stavros offers a good range of facilities for all ages: an amusement park and playgrounds for children, lots of shops (mainly inexpensive clothing), souvenir stands, grocery shops, restaurants, tavernas, fast–food kiosks and nicely presented cafés.
