Zumaia Spain

Zumaia ([s̻umaja], Spanish: Zumaya) is a small town in the north of Spain, in the Basque Country. The town has two beaches, Itzurun and Santiago, which are of particular interest to geologists because they lie within one of the longest continuous rock strata formations in the world. Known locally as the “flysch”, these rocks date from the mid-Cretaceous period to the present, covering a span of over 100 million years. The K–T boundary can be seen at Itzurun beach, and fossils can be found there, notably ammonites. The strata extend for about 8 km along the coast between the towns and beaches of Deba and Getaria, with Zumaia located roughly in the middle.
