Ayerbe Spain

Ayerbe is located 28 km from Huesca on highway A-132 toward Pamplona, on the Gállego River. It is bordered by the Riglos crags and the Santo Domingo range of hills to the north; by the villages of Loarre and Loscorrales to the east; by the villages of Lupiñén-Ortilla to the south; and by the villages of Biscarrués and Murillo de Gállego to the west. It lies at 42°16′36″N 00°41′21″W, at an elevation of 582 m above sea level (Alicante datum), and covers an area of 63.29 square kilometers. The town sits in an erosive depression carved into a Tertiary-age surface. The soil is dry, loose, and stony, generally flat with scattered small, isolated hills. The land is largely covered with pines, olive and almond trees, and vineyards are making a comeback. There are also cereal-growing areas to the east and south. Vegetation includes evergreen oaks, rosemary, gorse, other shrubs, and grass. Rabbits, hares, and partridges can occasionally be found. The area is particularly attractive to birdwatchers, who come to see the lammergeier, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, and many other birds of prey. Hunters find plenty of wild boar and deer, as well as partridge and quail. The hill range behind Ayerbe is part of the Pre-Pyrenees and reaches over 1,600 m, although the town itself lies on the plain at the foot of the range, which eventually descends to the Ebro River, about 100 km away.
