Covering about 467 km² (180 sq mi), Sölden is the largest municipality in Austria. Its population of around 3,449 (as of 2003) is far outnumbered by visitors, with capacity for about 15,000 guests and more than two million tourist bed nights per year—ranking it third in the country as a tourist destination after Vienna and Salzburg. Although it has lost some of its former small-village character, its tourism infrastructure and other attractions have been significantly developed in recent years. The main village lies at an elevation of 1,368 m (4,488 ft), while the upper village of Hochsölden at 2,090 m (6,857 ft) features several four-star hotels. The highest peak in the area is the Wildspitze at 3,768 m (12,362 ft), Austria’s second-highest mountain after the Großglockner. The Ötztal Glacier Road, which connects Sölden with the Rettenbach and Tiefenbachferner glaciers in the Ötztal Alps, is the second-highest paved road in Europe. The town’s name is sometimes written "Soelden" in English-language sources and on some websites and road signs.
