Almussafes Spain

Almussafes is a municipality in the Ribera Baixa comarca in the Valencian Community, Spain. Originally a Muslim hamlet with several farmhouses and a tower, it hosted a customs office (Arabic Masaf, from which the town’s name Almasaf evolved) that collected transit duties on goods entering and leaving nearby Valencia. Almussafes became independent from the municipality of Benifaió in 1672. Today, the town is home to a major Ford Motor Company factory. Monuments include the Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, built in the Churrigueresque style and housing several sculptures by Esteve (1782); underground tunnels connecting three Arab watchtowers, preserving Muslim-era artifacts such as weapons and oil jars; and the Racef Tower, dating from the 9th to the 11th centuries. Local festivities are celebrated in July in honor of the patron saint, Saint Bartholomew, and the Holy Cross.
