Arraiolos Portugal

Arraiolos is a municipality in Évora District in Portugal. As of 2011, it had a population of 7,363 and covers an area of 683.75 km². The town of Arraiolos itself has 3,351 inhabitants. The current mayor is Silvia Pinto, elected by the Unitarian Democratic Coalition. The town is known for its hilltop castle and its embroidered wool rugs and carpets, which have been produced since the Middle Ages and are widely known as Arraiolos rugs. In October 2003, Jorge Sampaio, then President of Portugal, invited the Presidents of Finland and Germany, as well as the Presidents of future EU member states Hungary, Latvia, and Poland, to Arraiolos to discuss the consequences of the 2004 enlargement of the European Union and plans for a Constitution for Europe. Subsequent meetings of non-executive presidents of European Union member states have become known as Arraiolos meetings.
