Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of Galápagos Province, Ecuador. It lies on the southwestern coast of San Cristóbal, the easternmost island in the archipelago, and is also the capital of San Cristóbal Canton. Founded by General Villamil Playas in the mid-19th century, it is named after President Alfredo Baquerizo (1859–1951). Today, local life centers on fishing, while tourism is growing along the waterfront with numerous hotels and shops. The town has a cathedral, post office, police station, hospital, and a branch of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. It is also home to the Galápagos National Park Interpretation Center, established in 1988, and a natural history museum. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is served by San Cristóbal Airport, with regular flights to mainland Ecuador.
