Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and borders Berlin. The town has a population of approximately 159,000. It is widely known for its castles and landscapes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Potsdam is more than 1,000 years old. The main attractions of Potsdam are its palaces and gardens, witnesses to the city’s history and its reputation as a cultural and scientific center. The most important sites to see in Potsdam are: • Sanssouci Park – This immense park just outside Berlin in the city of Potsdam is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with all its buildings, including Sanssouci Palace, a fabulous Rococo palace with stunning interiors. • The New Garden – This landscaped park is home to the Marble Palace (Marmorpalais) and Cecilienhof Palace. • Dutch Quarter (Holländisches Viertel) – In the middle of Potsdam are the “Dutch Quarters,” built in the 18th century. The neighborhood consists of 134 red-brick houses divided into four blocks. • Alter Markt – The Old Market Square is the historic city center. • Neuer Markt – The New Market Square is an original 18th‑century market square preserved in its historic form. • Babelsberg Park – A beautiful park with a neo‑Gothic style castle, also part of the World Heritage Site. • Potsdam Museum – Located in the Dutch Quarter, presenting the history and culture of the city. • Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) – The former town hall, now hosting changing exhibitions. • Gemäldegalerie – A beautiful collection of paintings in Sanssouci Palace. • Chinese Tea House – An 18th‑century pavilion built in the Chinese style that was fashionable at the time.
