Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India in the Bay of Bengal. It serves as the main administrative center of the islands, the headquarters of South Andaman district, and the territory’s only officially designated town. The city hosts the headquarters of the Andaman and Nicobar Police and the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s first integrated tri-service command. Port Blair is the primary gateway for travelers visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is connected to mainland India by both air and sea. Flights from the mainland to Port Blair take about two hours, while sea journeys to cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, or Visakhapatnam take about three to four days. Port Blair has air connections with Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam, with all flights arriving at Veer Savarkar International Airport. Passenger ships to and from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam dock at Haddo Wharf. The city is home to several museums and an important naval base, INS Jarawa of the Indian Navy, as well as sea and air bases of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Air Force. Port Blair is also known for the historic Cellular Jail and nearby small islands such as Corbyn’s Cove, Wandoor, Ross Island, and Viper Island, many of which were once occupied by British colonists.
