Braies Italy

Lake Braies (Lago di Braies) sits in the heart of the Dolomites and is one of Italy’s most famous alpine lakes, known for its clear emerald-green water and steep mountain backdrop. It’s in South Tyrol near the Austrian border, and while it’s easy to reach from towns like Dobbiaco and Brunico, it still feels quiet and remote if you visit early in the day or outside peak summer months. A popular way to experience Braies is by walking the loop trail around the lake. This marked path usually takes about 1–1.5 hours at an easy pace. Most of the route is gentle, but expect a few short, steeper parts and wooden stairways on the far side of the lake. Along the way you’ll pass scenic viewpoints for photos, a small chapel on the northern shore, and peaceful spots where you can sit and watch the mountains reflected in the water. In summer, you can rent a traditional wooden rowboat for a calm ride on the lake, or use Braies as a starting point for longer hikes into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. In winter, the area turns into a snowy landscape: the lake usually freezes, the surrounding forest is covered in snow, and nearby ski areas and cross-country trails draw skiers and other winter sports fans. Helpful to know: in high season, arrive early to avoid crowds and to find parking, as road access can be limited during the busiest hours. Wear sturdy footwear because paths can be uneven or muddy, and bring extra layers since mountain weather can change quickly. A range of places to stay—lakeside hotels and small guesthouses in nearby villages—makes it easy to include Braies in a longer trip through the Dolomites.
