Cavallino-Treporti, Venice Italy

Cavallino-Treporti, near Venice, is a natural environment of undeniable beauty, a protected area where the fauna and flora of lagoon and sea coexist, and where a variety of landscapes follow one another: sandbanks and salt marshes, fishing lagoons and vegetable gardens, historic villages, military architecture, lighthouses and docks, sandy beaches, a vast pine forest, and the mouth of the Sile River. Cavallino-Treporti is a natural park suspended between the sea and the lagoon, a unique setting that stretches for about 15 km. The municipality lies on a peninsula that separates the northern part of the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. The Sile River (which flows into the old riverbed of the Piave River) separates it from the municipality of Jesolo to the northeast. The peninsula is crossed along its entire length by the Pordelio Canal, which branches toward the west into two other canals (Portosecco and Saccagnana); all three canals are navigable. To the east, the Pordelio Canal is connected to the Sile River by the Casson Canal, whose confluence with the river is controlled by an artificial sluice gate.
