Zafferana Etnea, Sicily Italy

At about 500 meters above sea level, Zafferana Etnea offers a cooler climate during the oppressive heat of summer. Nestled between mountain and sea, it lies among the green hills that rise up to the heights of Mt. Etna, yet it’s just minutes from the Ionian Sea as well. The town is the starting point for excursions up to the famous volcano, with roads and trails leading into the national park. The bronze doors of the cathedral depict a scene from the eruption of 1792, and religious votive offerings are scattered throughout town, reflecting both respect for nature and prayers to the saints to protect it. Living next to Europe’s most active volcano keeps the town buzzing. The glow of lava can sometimes be seen lighting up the mountaintop at night, and now and then ash drifts down into town. Zafferana Etnea blends Old World architecture with new development, its economy boosted by seaside tourism and winter sports. Many visitors are surprised to learn that warm, sunny Sicily also offers downhill skiing in winter. The town’s name comes from its historic source of income: zafferano (saffron). A painting in the main church shows a vase of crocus flowers, the delicate blooms from which saffron is painstakingly harvested by hand. The Church of Santa Maria della Provvidenza, dedicated to the town’s patron saint, is a beautiful 18th‑century building. Every August, Zafferana Etnea holds a major festa in her honor, with religious processions followed by a town‑wide street party. The Municipal Palace is an elegant Liberty‑style villa that serves as the town hall, framed by palm and pine trees. An amphitheater follows the footprint of an ancient Roman one, offering lovely views and a full calendar of events under the banner “Etna in Scena,” a summer program of concerts and plays. Zafferana Etnea was a key crossroads in Roman times, along the inland route that linked Catania with Taormina. The town itself began in 1387 with the founding of a Benedictine monastery. Today it’s a welcoming resort area that combines the best of both sea and mountains, with easy access to beaches, high‑altitude adventures, and panoramic views of Etna and the Ionian coast.
