Porto Cesareo, Italy

Porto Cesareo Italy

Porto Cesareo, located 28 km from Lecce on the Ionian Sea, is an important tourist destination in the heart of Terra d’Arneo, well known for its golden beaches, beautiful sea, and easy accessibility. This small village lives to the rhythm of the sea and is centered around its picturesque little port, with a fish market and colorful traditional boats. Porto Cesareo is part of a Protected Marine Area and the “Palude del Conte e Duna Costiera” Regional Nature Reserve, one of the largest in Italy. It is worth walking along the trails that cross the park to immerse yourself in unspoiled nature and visit the Marine Biology Research Station and the Oceanography Museum. The landscape is dotted with fascinating, well-preserved watchtowers, including Torre Cesarea, Torre Chianca, and Torre Lapillo. These ancient stone towers were built to defend the coast from Saracen raids and today still stand guard over the shoreline. The countryside is also characterized by fortified masserie (farmsteads) and prehistoric dry-stone structures, along with important archaeological sites such as the Scalo di Furno settlement, which dates back to the Bronze Age.
