East Kilbride United Kingdom

East Kilbride was Scotland’s first designated ‘New Town’, developed to provide new housing for people relocating from nearby Glasgow. The town once had a pre-Christian sacred well dedicated to the Celtic goddess Brigid, which gives East Kilbride its name. The original parish church was built on the site of this well, and the current church on the same site dates from 1774. St Bride’s Church is another notable landmark, recognised as an important example of 20th-century British ecclesiastical architecture and protected as a Category A-listed building. The town also features a statue of Sir Walter Scott, known locally as ‘The White Man’.
