Peschiera del Garda, Italy

Peschiera del Garda Italy

Peschiera offers visitors visible traces of every historical era it has lived through: from the time of the pile-dwellers (stilt-house inhabitants), through the Roman Age, and the early to late Medieval period under the rule of the Scala family, to the era of Venetian domination, the Napoleonic Empire, and finally Habsburg rule, when Peschiera was one of the four fortresses of the Austrian Quadrilatero, then the most powerful defensive system in Italy. Peschiera also played an important role during Italian Unification and later in the First World War. This is due to its geographic position, which made it a strategic hub for communications between the Alpine and Po Valley regions, as well as between east and west. Peschiera sits at the southernmost point of Lake Garda (in the Veneto Region, Province of Verona), where the lake becomes the Mincio River and, in turn, a tributary of the Po River flowing into the Adriatic Sea.
