Torre del Greco Italy

The city of Torre del Greco is located in the southern Italian region of Campania, in the province of Naples. Torre del Greco lies at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, which in the past has often destroyed the town. In 1631 and 1794, Torre del Greco was buried under a thick layer of lava. The town was probably founded as a wealthy suburb of Herculaneum. Until the year 1000, the city was called Turris Octava. The current name is derived from a grape variety that thrives here: the Greco. During the Middle Ages, it was very prosperous thanks to rich fish catches and the high yields from coral processing.
