Mitla (Mictlan or Place of the Dead in Nahuatl, Lyobaa or Place of Rest in Zapotec, Ñuu Ndiyi or Place of the Dead in Mixtec) is an archaeological site located in the municipality of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, about 40 km from the state capital along the Pan-American Highway (No. 190) that leads to Tehuantepec, and more than 600 km from Mexico City. Several archaeologists have worked at the site, most notably Leopoldo Batres (1852–1926), who uncovered Zapotec foundations beneath existing Mixtec decorations.
