Filandia Colombia

Filandia is a town and municipality in the northern part of the Quindío Department of Colombia. It is located on the western flank of the Central Cordillera of the Andes mountains that run through central Colombia, about 26 km (16 miles) north of the departmental capital, Armenia. Filandia is the northernmost of the twelve municipalities that make up Quindío, the second-smallest department in Colombia. The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Coffee is the main crop, but the municipality’s diverse ecosystem also supports the production of many other fruits and vegetables. The population is almost evenly split between urban and rural areas, with about 7,000 people living in the town of Filandia itself and around 6,500 in the surrounding rural zones. Most residents are classified as mestizo (63.2%), and the predominant religion is Roman Catholicism. Filandia is known for its traditional architecture, scenic landscapes, and the friendliness of its people, making it one of the most attractive towns in Quindío and in Colombia as a whole. Popular tourist attractions include the “mirador” (viewing tower), which offers sweeping views over the Cauca River Valley to the west and Los Nevados National Natural Park to the east (on clear days it’s also possible to see both Armenia and Pereira from the top), and the café on the main square where scenes from the famous Colombian telenovela “Café, con aroma de mujer” were filmed.
