Fiesole, Italy

Fiesole Italy

Its origins go back to the 7th century BC, when it became a thriving Etruscan city. One of its greatest cultural treasures is its archaeological heritage, with Etruscan temples and remains from the Roman period, especially visible in the ancient baths and in the ruins of a 1st‑century BC amphitheater. If you visit Fiesole in the summer months, you’ll see how this amphitheater regains its former splendor, as it hosts a jazz festival and theatrical performances during the Fiesolana Estate, the oldest open‑air festival in all of Italy. The visit to this archaeological complex is complemented by the Bandini Museum, which displays works of art from the dawn of the Renaissance. As a counterpoint, you can also visit the Primo Conti Museum, where the work of the avant‑garde artist of the same name is exhibited. Architecture and religious art lovers should not miss the Cathedral of San Romolo and the Basilica of Sant’Alessandro, a 15th‑century church in a location that offers wide views over the surrounding landscape, dotted with cozy country villas. Even older and higher up is the Church of San Francesco, dating from the 14th century.
