Celaya, México

Celaya México

Known for its exquisite handcrafted small boxes, Celaya is considered “The Golden Door of the Bajío” because of the commercial importance it has had since its founding in 1570. Its name is of Basque origin and means “Flat Land.” Another of its geographic characteristics is its favorable position in the Bajío high plateau, whose lands are watered from north to southwest by the Lerma River. During the colonial period, the city was an important center for the cultivation and distribution of products that were sent to the mines of Guanajuato and Zacatecas.
