Hong Kong Island Hong Kong, SAR China

Human settlement on Hong Kong Island dates back thousands of years, as shown by Neolithic artifacts discovered in Stanley. During the Qin dynasty under Emperor Qin Shihuang, the imperial government settled the Baiyue peoples, and the area of present‑day Hong Kong Island later fell under the jurisdiction of Panyu County in Nanhai Commandery through the Western Jin dynasty. After the sixth year of the Eastern Jin dynasty (AD 331), it became part of Bao’an County. According to the work “Hong Kong Island East Region Winds,” copper coins dating from the Sui and Tang dynasties to the Song dynasty were unearthed on Kellett Island (formerly known as Lantern Island, now the site of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club near the entrance to the Cross‑Harbour Tunnel), suggesting that commercial activity was already taking place on the island during the Sui and Tang periods. In the first year of the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty (1573), the area became part of Xin’an County and remained so until it was ceded to the United Kingdom.
