Ko Yao Yai Island is the largest island in the Ko Yao Archipelago. The island group lies in Phang Nga Bay in Phang Nga Province, Thailand. “Ko Yao Yai” means “big long island.” The other main island in the group is Ko Yao Noi (“little long island”), located just north of Ko Yao Yai and separated from it by a narrow channel. Ko Yao Yai has a population of about 8,000 people, while Ko Yao Noi has about 4,500 inhabitants. Most residents are Sunni Muslims. The total area of the archipelago is 137.6 km².
