Leiden The Netherlands

Leiden is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. As of August 2017, the municipality of Leiden had a population of 123,856, but the city forms a densely connected urban area with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten, and Zoeterwoude, for a total of 206,647 inhabitants. The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) also includes Katwijk in the urban agglomeration, bringing the total population of the Leiden urban agglomeration to 270,879. In the larger Leiden urban area, Teylingen, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout are also included, for a total of 348,868 inhabitants. Leiden is located on the Oude Rijn River, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of The Hague and about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Amsterdam. The recreational lake district of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) lies just northeast of Leiden.
