São Luís Brazil

São Luís is the capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão, located on São Luís Island in São Marcos Bay. It is a charming city with a unique culture. Once an important slave port, São Luís has preserved many African traditions, which are evident in its cuisine, popular customs and festivals, and in the lively reggae scene that makes its culture stand out among Brazilian cities. The main tourist attraction is the historic center, with a vast collection of 17th- to 19th-century buildings. The Centro Histórico is an open-air museum filled with countless architectural details, such as azulejos (decorative tiles), picturesque windows, doors and balconies, cobblestone streets, and narrow alleys that transport visitors back to the city’s rich past. São Luís also has one of the best concentrations of galleries, museums, and craft shops in Brazil’s Northeast. It is a fascinating place, a city with a magical feel and a vibrant atmosphere—simply a joy to visit.
