Las Rozas, Spain

Las Rozas Spain

Las Rozas de Madrid (often shortened to Las Rozas) is one of the largest townships and municipalities in the autonomous community of Madrid, Spain, with an area of between 58.8 and 59.14 km². It lies about 17–20 km northwest of the city of Madrid, on the A-6 freeway toward A Coruña. Las Rozas is located at the start of this freeway, near the M-505 junction to El Escorial, which marks the southern boundary of this comarca or district (although it is no longer rural). The municipality is served by four RENFE railway stations: Las Rozas, Las Matas, El Pinar and El Tejar. A fifth stop, Peñascales, has been closed. Las Rozas borders Torrelodones to the north, Villanueva del Pardillo and Galapagar to the west, the Monte del Pardo natural area (Madrid) to the east, and Majadahonda to the south. Las Rozas has one of the highest average per capita incomes in the Community of Madrid. During the final decades of the 20th century, the town experienced a strong building boom, mostly as a bedroom community for Madrid, with rapid population growth that more than doubled between 1991 and 2005 (from 35,137 to 76,246 inhabitants). At times, the provision of local services (such as schools and new housing) lagged behind the area’s high birth and immigration rates. However, by 2010 the community was well served in health care, education, and social services.
