Marghera Italy

Marghera is a town within the municipality of Venice, Italy. It is located on the mainland, west of the historic city, and is part of the Mestre urban area, forming its southern extension. In mid-2009, the municipality of Marghera had a total of 28,622 inhabitants, of whom 17,522 lived in the main town. Strictly speaking, Marghera is the name of the residential area, but it is common to extend this name to the adjacent industrial zone, whose official name is Porto Marghera. Modern Marghera developed from urban plans approved in the 1920s, designed to provide Venice with a commercial and industrial port and a residential district for its workers. The major port and industrial complex includes refineries and petrochemical and fertilizer plants, which have caused pollution problems in the area.
