Moray (County) United Kingdom

Moray, also known historically as Elginshire, is a historic county, registration county, and lieutenancy area in northeast Scotland. It borders Nairnshire to the west, Inverness-shire to the south, and Banffshire to the east. Elgin served as the county town when Moray functioned as a local government county until 1975. Before 1889, Moray included two large exclaves within Inverness-shire, and Inverness-shire had an exclave within Moray. The Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 reassigned these exclaves to the surrounding counties. Officially called Elginshire for many years—sharing the name of the parliamentary constituency established in 1708—the area increasingly became known as Moray in official documents after 1930. The term “Morayshire” was later introduced in handwritten ledgers to avoid confusion with similar names such as Norway and Morar.
