In the first century, the Roman geographer Pliny the Elder wrote in his *Natural History* that of all metals, the longest vein is iron. In the part of Cantabria that borders the sea, there is a very high mountain, made entirely of this material, which is extraordinary. The most plausible interpretation of this text is that the Romans were fully aware of the enormous iron ore vein of Mount Triano, which extended through what is now known as the Mining Zone of Biscay, between Baracaldo and Somorrostro. Despite this written reference, the known fact that the Romans were already exploiting the area’s iron mines, and the presence nearby of a Roman colony, Flavibriga (Castro-Urdiales), there is little evidence of a Roman presence in the Barbadún estuary and in the territory of Somorrostro.
