Odense, Denmark

Odense Denmark

Odense, located on Funen, Denmark’s “garden island,” is the country’s third-largest city and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. The city’s cobblestone streets are lined with tiny thatched-roof houses, and swans glide along green waterways shaded by weeping willows, creating a storybook atmosphere that may inspire fairy tales of your own. At Hans Christian Andersen House, visitors can listen to recordings of Andersen’s stories and explore a museum that includes a library of his works and manuscripts, along with paper cuttings and drawings from his travels. Odense’s charming old town is filled with beautifully restored, half-timbered buildings that make it a pleasure to wander on foot. Saint Knud’s Church (Odense Cathedral), the city’s oldest and largest church, is primarily Gothic in style. One of its most fascinating features is the crypt, where the skeletons of King Canute and his brother Benedict are on display. Just outside the center, Den Fynske Landsby (The Funen Village) is an open-air museum featuring around 30 traditional buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, offering a glimpse into rural Danish life of the past. About 40 km south of Odense lies Egeskov, one of Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance water castles. Perched on an island in a small lake, Egeskov looks like something out of a fairy tale. Although the castle is still privately inhabited, its expansive grounds are open to the public and include a veteran car museum, a toy museum, a deer park, a huge treehouse, and a baroque garden maze. With its blend of medieval charm, cultural richness, galleries, museums, and a vibrant arts scene, Odense is a small but captivating city that ranks among Denmark’s most enchanting destinations.
