Priorat Spain

Priorat is a county (comarca) in Catalonia, Spain. The central area of the county, known as the “historic Priorat” (Priorat històric), produces highly regarded wines certified under the DOQ Priorat designation. Wines from the rest of the county are certified as DO Montsant, a wine region that also includes a small part of the neighboring county of Ribera d’Ebre. Until 1972, however, the main economic activity was galena (lead ore) mining, which had been carried out since prehistoric times. Another key agricultural activity is the production of olives and olive oil, the latter certified under the DOP Siurana designation. Historically there was greater production of hazelnuts and almonds, but these crops are now grown mostly for personal use.
