Porto Torres Italy

Porto Torres is a municipality and city in the Province of Sassari in northern Sardinia, Italy. It lies on the northwest coast, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) east of the Gorditanian promontory (Capo del Falcone), on the broad bay of the Gulf of Asinara. In ancient times, Turris Libyssonis was one of the most important cities in Sardinia. It was probably of purely Roman origin and appears to have been founded by Julius Caesar, as it bore the title Colonia Julia. Pliny described it as a colony—the only one on the island in his time—suggesting that there had previously been no town on the site, only a fort or castellum. It is also mentioned by Ptolemy and in the Itineraries, though without indication that it was then a place of particular importance.
