Scilla, Italy

Scilla Italy

Scilla is a beautifully situated fishing village in the Calabria region, in southern Italy, at the toe of Italy’s boot. A rocky spur topped by an ancient fortress divides two narrow strips of shoreline backed by steep hillsides. The town is nestled into this compact, scenic landscape, creating an unforgettable view. Steeped in legend, Scilla is traditionally known as the home of the fearsome monster Scylla who, together with Charybdis (across the water toward Sicily), guarded the narrow Strait of Messina and threatened Odysseus/Ulysses as he sailed past. According to the town’s tourist information, “the origins of the castle date back to Ulysses.” Mythology aside, the castle’s dramatic position on a commanding rocky outcrop at the entrance to this vital shipping route has made it an important site for thousands of years. Today, Scilla is a charming small town where visitors can relax on the beach, explore the castle, or wander through the old fishing quarter, camera in hand.
