San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec is the seat of the municipality of the same name and the second most populous city in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is part of the Tuxtepec District in the Papaloapan Region. As of the 2005 census, the city had a population of 94,209 and the municipality 144,555 (0.979% of the state’s population), although census figures are often underreported for various reasons. The municipality lies in the region known as La Cuenca (“The Basin”), is located 36 feet above sea level, and covers an area of approximately 580 square miles (1,500 km²). The city itself is bordered by the Papaloapan River and is located a few kilometers south of the Cerro de Oro Dam on its tributary, the Santo Domingo River. The municipality borders the state of Veracruz to the north, the municipality of Loma Bonita to the east, and San José Chiltepec to the south. It is located nearly 100 miles (160 km) from the port of Veracruz, 130 miles (210 km) from Oaxaca City, the state capital, and 310 miles (500 km) from Mexico City.
