Santa Ana is the county seat and second most populous city in Orange County, California, within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The United States Census Bureau estimated its 2011 population at 329,427, making Santa Ana the 57th most populous city in the United States. Located in Southern California along the Santa Ana River, the city lies about 10 miles (16 km) from the coast. Founded in 1869, Santa Ana is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area, the second-largest metropolitan area in the United States, which had nearly 18 million residents in 2010. Santa Ana is one of the most densely populated large cities in the country, ranking fourth nationally in density among cities with over 300,000 residents. In 2011, Forbes ranked Santa Ana as the fourth-safest U.S. city with a population over 250,000. The city’s northwestern and southern boundaries are part of two of Orange County’s largest commercial hubs: the Anaheim–Santa Ana edge city and the South Coast Plaza–John Wayne Airport edge city.
