tegernsee Germany

The Tegernsee Valley has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Written records from the Benedictine monastery date back to 746; during the Middle Ages it was one of the most important cultural centers in the region. At its peak, the monastery housed around 200 monks and more than a thousand residents working in various trades and industries. Under Abbot Bernhard Wenzl (1673–1700), the monastery complex was remodeled in the Baroque style typical of the time; only the abbey church has been preserved in its original form. In 1815, the former castle and monastery buildings were converted into the summer residence of King Wittelsbach. Many other nobles and artists soon followed him to the region, marking the beginnings of Tegernsee’s tourism industry. In 1820, landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell designed the castle gardens, which are largely preserved today. From the former monastery, the Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee brewery was founded, and the former monastery church now serves as the local parish church.
