Ulm, Germany

Ulm Germany

Ulm is a town on the border with Bavaria in Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany. It is home to the highest church steeple in the world at 161.53 m, even taller than the Cologne Cathedral. Albert Einstein was born here. Around the city there are many statues of sparrows, called “Spatzen.” Spatzen is a nickname for the residents of Ulm and a symbol of the city. According to legend, while building the cathedral, the workers could not figure out how to get the long wooden beams into the church until they noticed a sparrow entering its nest holding a piece of straw lengthwise instead of sideways. The most important sights in Ulm are: • Cathedral (Ulmer Münster): Construction began in the 14th century. The top of the tower, the highest church tower in the world, can be reached by climbing 768 steps and offers a magnificent view of Ulm and the surrounding region. On clear days, you can see the Alps. • Fischerviertel: the Fishermen’s Quarter is a picturesque old part of town with half-timbered houses along the Blau River. It contains the most crooked hotel in the world. • Schwörmontag: a city festival that includes the “Nabada,” a water parade on the Danube River. • The Christmas market in the square in front of the Münster. • The farmers’ market on Wednesdays and Saturdays in front of the Münster. • The Rathaus (town hall), with its ancient colorfully painted walls and an astronomical clock dating from 1520. • The library of Ulm, also known as the “Glaspyramide” or glass pyramid because of its architecture. • Narrensprung, the annual parade that marks the beginning of the Carnival season.
