Zumaia Spain

Zumaia (Spanish: Zumaya) is a small town in northern Spain, in the Basque Country. The town has two beaches, Itzurun and Santiago, which are of special interest to geologists because they are located among one of the longest continuous rock strata formations in the world. Known locally as the “flysch,” these layers date from the mid-Cretaceous period to the present, covering more than 100 million years of geological history. The K–T boundary can be seen at Itzurun Beach, and fossils—especially ammonites—can be found there. The rock strata extend for about 8 km (5 miles) along the coast, between the towns and beaches of Deba and Getaria, with Zumaia lying roughly in the middle.
