Altopascio Italy

Altopascio, one of the main towns in the province of Lucca, has a rich history of traditions and culture. In medieval times, the town of Altopascio was a key stopping point for travellers on the famous Via Francigena and a centre of hospitality as the seat of the Knights of Tau, who remain the symbol of the town. Altopascio is also famous for its bread, hence the name “La città del Pane” (the City of Bread). The Town Council is a member of the association of the same name, which works to promote the recognition and quality of bread and local bread specialities linked to specific areas. Altopascio includes the villages of Badia Pozzeveri, Marginone, Spianate and Turchetto. It’s in a strategically located tourist area: about 40 minutes from the Versilia coast, Pisa and Florence, 15 minutes from Lucca and Montecatini Terme, and around an hour from the Chianti hills and the art cities and medieval towns of Tuscany such as Siena, San Gimignano and Certaldo.
