Ercolano, Italy

Ercolano Italy

Ercolano is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania in southern Italy. It sits at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius, on the Bay of Naples, just south‑east of the city of Naples. The medieval town of Resina – pronounced Resìna – was built on the volcanic deposits left by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, from which the town’s present name is taken. Ercolano is a holiday resort and a starting point for trips to the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum and for bus trips up Vesuvius. The town also produces leather goods, buttons, glass, and the wine known as Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ).
