Ercolano, Italy

Ercolano Italy

Ercolano is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples in the Campania region of southern Italy. It sits at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples, just southeast of the city of Naples. The medieval town of Resina (pronounced “Ree-ZEE-na”) was built on the volcanic deposits left by the 79 CE eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, from which Ercolano takes its present name. Ercolano is a resort town and a starting point for trips to the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum and for bus excursions up Mount Vesuvius. The town also produces leather goods, buttons, glass, and the wine known as Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ).
