Mitla (Mictlan, or Place of the Dead in Nahuatl; Lyobaa, or Place of Rest in Zapotec; Ñuu Ndiyi, or Place of the Dead in Mixtec) is an archaeological site in the municipality of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It lies 40 km from the state capital along the Pan-American Highway (No. 190) towards Tehuantepec, and over 600 km from Mexico City. Several archaeologists have worked there, notably Leopoldo Batres (1852–1926), who uncovered Zapotec foundations beneath existing Mixtec decorations.
