Las Rozas, Spain

Las Rozas Spain

Las Rozas de Madrid (or simply Las Rozas) is one of the larger townships and municipalities in the autonomous community of Madrid, Spain, covering an area of between 58.8 and 59.14 km². It lies about 17–20 km northwest of the city of Madrid itself, on the A-6 motorway to A Coruña. Las Rozas is the starting point of this motorway, close to the M-505 junction to El Escorial, which marks the southern boundary of this comarca or district (although it is no longer rural). The municipality is served by four RENFE railway stations: Las Rozas, Las Matas, El Pinar and El Tejar. A fifth stop at Peñascales has been closed. The municipality borders Torrelodones to the north, Villanueva del Pardillo and Galapagar to the west, the Monte del Pardo national park (Madrid) to the east, and Majadahonda to the south. Las Rozas has one of the highest average per capita incomes in the Community of Madrid. During the final decades of the 20th century, the town underwent intensive development, largely as a commuter town for Madrid, leading to strong population growth, which more than doubled between 1991 and 2005 (from 35,137 to 76,246 inhabitants). Provision of local services (such as schools and new housing) was at times outstripped by the area’s high birth and immigration rates. However, by 2010 the community was well served across health, education and social services.
