Licata, Sicily Italy

Licata (Greek: Φιντίας; Latin: Phintias or Plintis; formerly also Alicata) is a city and comune on the south coast of Sicily, at the mouth of the Salso River (the ancient Himera), about halfway between Agrigento and Gela. It is a major seaport that developed at the turn of the twentieth century, exporting sulfur—whose refining has made Licata the largest European export center—as well as asphalt and, at times, cheese. West of the port city there is a series of pocket beaches separated by wave-cut headlands that rise as high as 40 metres (130 ft) (Amore 2002).
