Mayrhofen Austria

Mayrhofen is a town in the Zillertal (Ziller River Valley) in the Austrian state of Tyrol, located about an hour from the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck. The town offers a wide range of summer and winter sports, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding. Mayrhofen lies close to the Hintertux Glacier which, at 3,250 meters (10,660 feet) above sea level, sits above the snowline and offers skiing all year round. Mayrhofen is set between the Penken and Ahorn mountains, which provide ski runs in winter and mountain biking, hiking, and paragliding in summer. Ahorn features mainly easy and intermediate slopes, as well as a long, steep black run (formerly red) that was once part of the World Cup Downhill circuit but was removed for safety reasons. Penken is home to Austria’s steepest piste, called Harakiri, along with a wide variety of runs of varying difficulty. It is linked by lifts to the neighboring villages of Finkenberg, Lanersbach, and Schwendau. Penken is accessed via a gondola on the main street next to the Sport Hotel Strass in the village center, while the Ahorn cable car—Austria’s largest as of 2008, carrying up to 160 passengers—is located at the southern end of town. Mayrhofen has a strong snowboarding scene, with a Vans-sponsored fun park and the snowboard-focused hotel Gasthof Zillertal, owned by the Dutch organization SAIKO Expeditions. Mountaineer Peter Habeler and downhill racer Uli Spiess both come from Mayrhofen.
