Kallikrateia Greece

Kallikrateia is a municipal unit in Chalkidiki, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it has been part of the municipality of Nea Propontida; before that it was an independent municipality with its seat in the town of Nea Kallikrateia. The municipal unit covers an area of 108.894 km². According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 11,571, while the town itself has 7,238 inhabitants, making it the third-largest town in Chalkidiki. Nea Kallikrateia was founded after the 1922 refugee crisis, mainly by residents who came from Kallikrateia (today Mimarsinan) in Eastern Thrace. They settled in an area where the metochi (dependency) of the Xenofontos Monastery of Mount Athos once stood, known as “Stomion.” Many accounts suggest that the area was inhabited in prehistoric times, although these claims have not been confirmed.
